The year I fell back in love with reading

This newsletter probably should have come out closer to the beginning of the year but it took awhile for me to comb through all the books I read in 2023. So here are some highlights from the 40 books I read in 2023 and I think you should pick them up THIS year in 2024 to read for yourself!

Business and Self-Development Books

This year started with a strong focus on self-improvement and business strategy. Here’s a look at the most impactful reads in this category:

- Make Time by Jake Knapp and John Zeratsky

If there’s one book that shaped my year, it’s this one. The authors present a non-prescriptive approach to productivity that anyone can tailor to their needs. The practical examples provided make it easy to implement the strategies discussed.

- Building a Second Brain by Tiago Forte

For those looking to optimize their organizational skills, this book is gold. Tiago Forte offers innovative strategies for information management that can significantly impact how you work and learn.

- $100 Million Offers by Alex Hermozi

An eye-opener to the art of creating irresistible business offers, this book is a must-read for anyone looking to elevate their business game without the hard sell. Hermozy's principles about making an offer that no one can refuse can drastically simplify the way you do business.

- Anything You Want by Derek Sivers

This quick read is packed with nuggets of wisdom from Sivers’ own experiences in building and selling CD Baby. It’s a testament to how aligning your business with your personal passions can lead to extraordinary success. Notably, its brevity makes it an excellent choice for those easing back into reading.

- Keep Going by Austin Kleon

This book is a gem for creatives struggling to sustain their creative momentum. With practical advice and engaging humor, Austin Kleon reminds us how to stay creative despite the challenges.

"Most businesses should be founded on a core offer that is exceptional."

Alex Hormozi

Fiction and Fantasy

Switching gears to fiction, in 2023 I fell back in love with long reads of fiction and sci-fi with big worlds and over the top stories.

- The Mistborn Trilogy by Brandon Sanderson

A high fantasy series that I cannot recommend enough. Sanderson has created a universe so rich and characters so compelling that each book was a new adventure I looked forward to continuing each night.

- Ready Player Two by Ernest Cline

A sequel that perhaps didn’t quite capture the magic of its predecessor but still provided an enjoyable read. The book continues to explore the vast virtual universe with new challenges for the protagonist, though it might feel like a separate entity from the first book.

Biographies and Autobiographies

I stepped into biographies for the first time in awhile in 2023 and I’m excited to do more in 2024

- Greenlights by Matthew McConaughey

This autobiography is as charismatic and engaging as the author himself. McConaughey shares life stories with wisdom and flair, making this a compelling listen, especially in audiobook format where his voice brings his tales to life.

A Year in Books

2023 was a year marked by variety in my reading adventures—from business insights and self-help ideas to immersive fictional worlds and intimate life stories. Each book offered a new perspective, a fresh challenge, and a novel idea to contemplate or implement. If you’ve had any impactful reads last year or so far this year or have recommendations, drop a comment below. I’d love to hear what books have inspired you and why. Happy reading and here's to a literary 2024 filled with even more fantastic reads!

If you’d like to see every single book I read in 2023 I did make a Youtube video talking about it so feel free to check that out for even more great reads!

Keep on Creating!
